We are living through some very hard times, no doubt about it. The word “unprecedented” gets used a lot to refer to our present trials, but as a historian, I tend to take a much longer view. When we look at other hard seasons from our nation’s past, we gain perspective and, in the case of what happened in late 1960s America, hope.
